FRIENDS ACADEMY INDOOR TRACK, GLEN COVE, NY - This project consisted of two parts: a conversion of the existing athletic center into an arts center and the erection of a new indoor track and athletic center. The Arts Center is located in what was formerly the girls’ athletic complex. In turn, the Girls’ Athletic Program is now incorporated into the new athletic complex. Of major consequence to the design of the new complex was the client’s wish to provide these larger facilities without disturbing the scale of the existing school buildings. In both cases the siting contributes to the deceptively modest scale of the addition. The Athletic Center uses the grade and the roof slope to minimize the apparent size of the building where it fronts (and defines) the inner campus. The Arts Center addition embraces the old Girls’ Gym. Its curved end marks the end of the procession of linked school buildings and acts as the pivot for the major campus entrance road just to the south. Careful brick detailing extends the Quaker spirit of craft which has enhanced the campus and its diverse yet harmonious elements.
