KINLOCH FARM, THE PLAINS, VA - The 2,000-acre working farm in the hills of northern Virginia required an extensive reworking of the existing buildings and landscape to transform the beautiful retreat into a personal estate complex. The farm and its related buildings have also been refurbished to accommodate efficient improvements in agriculture technology. The main house, portions of which date prior to the Civil War, was enlarged and reorganized. The elegant progression from room to room is mirrored in the outdoor spaces surrounding the building which unfold from its core in a manner derived from Moorish examples such as the Alhambra Palace. Thus, a vernacular plantation home merged with a foreign typology to create an unprecedented formal and programmatic ensemble.
