W HOTEL, BOSTON, MA - The W Hotel in Boston is a new 230-room luxury-class hospitality venue in the heart of the theater district of the city. The building, a white metal and glass structure, rises as a beacon above the brick and stone buildings which surround it.
Taking our cues from the architecture of the exterior, the interiors of the new hotel are clean and modern, representing a new direction for the W brand. Granite, elm, polished stainless steel, frosted glass, leather, and fabric combine to produce a crisp, warm palette attuned to the spirit of the city. Visible from the street through floor-to-ceiling glass, the lobby “living room” forms a part of the street scene, offering guests an exciting perch from which to overlook pedestrians and theater-goers alike.
Art figures prominently throughout the lower floors. Yet, it is incorporated as an extension of the architectural concept rather than as decoration. In the lobby, a polished stainless steel screen dramatizes the stone feature wall and draws the color and movement of the street onto this interior surface. In the rooms, we have included a major art piece, a translucent screen that divides the bedroom and the bathroom areas. The piece functions as a room divider, but also expands the bedroom through the illusion of space it projects. We have taken the subject matter for the art pieces from the local environment. They recall either the infinite horizon line of the ocean or the visual infinity of a dark hardwood forest.
In addition to the hotel, the project comprises a restaurant, health club, spa, night club, and banqueting rooms as well as 70 condominium units that vary in size from studio to three bedrooms.
